The reach of this graphic artist and illustrator is so extensive and varied that it was difficult to choose only twelve designs which are just a minor demonstration of his work, this time focused on his lithography.

The reach of this graphic artist and illustrator is so extensive and varied that it was difficult to choose only twelve designs which are just a minor demonstration of his work, this time focused on his lithography.

Why is this particular artist so dear to us? Oldřich Kulhánek made his mark in the public imagination not only as a graphic artist and illustrator, but also as the designer of the Czech banknotes issued after the split of Czechoslovakia. The preparation of banknotes for printing is a complicated and fascinating process, and therefore, close cooperation between the artist and the banknote producer is so important. In the STC, we treasure the relationship between our printing company and the artist which was established during several years of our cooperation.

Oldřich Kulhánek, a graphic artist and illustrator, was born in Prague on 26 February 1940. Beginning in 1958, he studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague in the studio of Professor Karel Svolinský. He started producing his own work between 1965 and 1967 using lithography, a technique to which he returned time after time. In 1967, he became interested in intaglio printing, or line etching. This period ended up lasting 20 years. The author used this technique to create many engravings and whole cycles. He also got the opportunity to illustrate various important publications and books.

After the split of Czechoslovakia, he started to create banknote designs for the new Czech Republic, which subsequently inspired the good-humoured lampoon cycle “Funny Money”.

Kulhánek’s work has a wide range of themes, From depictions of his civic attitudes – which resulted in several weeks spent in a Communist prison – historical themes, a cycle of tributes to important figures, and banknote and postage stamp designs.

In the last few years, however, MAN occupied a prominent position in his creative outlook. These almost anatomical sketches created visual frames for the graphic sheets he made during the last years of his life.

Works by Kulhánek are represented in many galleries and private collections around the world.

We truly hope that our calendar with illustrations of Saint Sebastian, The Fall, Buffoonery and many more will accompany you and bring you joy throughout the year 2020.
