Commemorative Banknote Featuring a Portrait of Alois Rašín

We offer you a commemorative print based on a design by Karel Zeman, which was awarded by the Czech National Bank in the art competition for the Commemorative banknotes with portraits of Men of October (the political organisation Muži října), issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of an independent Czechoslovak currency.

Only 80 prints are expected to go on sale in the SPWS e-shop.

In 2017 the Czech National Bank announced an art competition in which participants were to present designs for the first commemorative banknote with a portrait of Alois Rašín. The competition brought together 15 artists who submitted a total of 17 graphic designs. The competition was won by the academic painter Eva Hašková, whose designs were used to create the commemorative banknote. However, the design by Karel Zeman received a special award from the Design Review Committee for its very impressive execution, and a private entity decided to realise this design in the STATE PRINTING WORKS OF SECURITY and offer it to collectors.

The art design was converted in SPWS by Michal Šindelář using graphic software based on the client’s supplied documents. Hand drawings and engravings were made by Martin Srb.

The commemorative print was printed at the STATE PRINTING WORKS OF SECURITY on 50% cotton paper, 100 g/m2, with a positive-negative watermark with linden leaf motif, supplemented by a combination of protective fibres (optically visible blue fibres with blue fluorescence in the UV spectrum, faintly visible green fibres with green fluorescence in the UV spectrum). The front side features the main motive, a portrait of A. Rašín printed with a steelprint. Other printing techniques were also utilised – offset, letterpress and screen printing.

The expected start of sale is 5 June 2023. The selling price is CZK 2,500 including VAT. Due to technical reasons it is not possible to reserve a commemorative banknote in advance.
